A Day at the HKUST Labs

HLMA held its first HLMA x HKUST Lab Visit and Tour on Nov 16, attracting over 150 secondary school students and teachers to visit HKUST. Participants had the rare opportunity to visit the laboratories of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering to explore state-of-the-art scientific applications, including robotics demonstration and interactive AI training dataset activities. Students also witnessed captivating demonstrations on computational fluid dynamics that illustrate the critical role of mathematical principles in the realm of engineering.

In a session introducing HLMA, Prof. Yang Wang, Vice President for Institutional Advancement of HKUST and a member of the HLMA Steering Committee, shared his astonishment at the exceptional research efforts of secondary school students who participated in HLMA over the years, noting the high quality of work typically seen at undergraduate or even postgraduate level. Prof. Tim Woo, Founding Director of the Center for Global and Community Engagement, School of Engineering, introduced HKUST’s proud robotics team and encouraged secondary students to collaborate with university students in developing robots for societal benefit. Prof. Frederick Fong, a member of the HLMA Scientific Committee, encouraged students to take part in the 2025 HLMA competition and realize their intellectual potential through mathematics research.
