Each team shall consist of 1 to 5 students studying at the same secondary school. Each team shall be supervised and led by a teacher of the same school. Participants are reminded that while a larger team encourages wider participation, it may entail more challenges in the coordination and tasks distribution than a smaller team. Participants are encouraged to plan the team size with these considerations in mind.
The eligibility of a student or teacher is defined by their respective school enrollment or employment as of March 31, 2023. For the purposes of this competition, the student(s) or the teacher of a team will continue to represent the same team even though he or she may have changed school after March 31, 2023.
A secondary school may have more than one team participating in each competition. A teacher may also supervise and lead more than one team. However, a student can only participate in one team.
The Competition
Students who wish to participate in the Hang Lung Mathematics Awards can form a team and complete the initial registration through the registration portal.
Each team should select a suitable mathematics research topic and perform an independent research. The team is encouraged to formulate a research outline, which is usually helpful in clarifying the research process.
Each team must finalize its registration by providing accurate and complete information of the team through the registration portal on or before March 31, 2023.
Each team should submit a research report, written in English, before midnight of August 31, 2023, through a designated portal (details to be informed by email in due course).
Specific formats in writing a research report need to be observed. Each team should comply with academic honesty standards and respect the intellectual property rights of the works of others when producing the research report. Please refer to the Competition Guide for details.
Late submission of research reports will not be accepted.
By registering to participate in the Hang Lung Mathematics Awards, each participant is deemed to have read, understood, and agreed to the Personal Data Collection Statement for the Hang Lung Mathematics Awards.
In case of any discrepancy between the different language versions in respect of any part or all of the contents in this Hang Lung Mathematics Awards website, the English version shall prevail.
In case of any dispute arising in relation to the competition, the co-organizers of Hang Lung Mathematics Awards reserve the right to make the final decision.
Assessment Process
The Hang Lung Mathematics Awards adopts a two-stage assessment process: the “Research Report Review”, and the “Oral Defense”. For details, please refer to the Assessment Process.
Inportant Notes
During the research process, a team may seek opinions and accept guidance from other people. However, team members should actually perform the research work by themselves, and are expected to truly understand the contents of their work.
Choosing a seemingly advanced and technical mathematics topic to work on may not offer any advantage in the competition. Gaps in understanding can be easily detected by our reviewers and referees. Moreover, it is usually difficult to demonstrate creativity on advanced topics.
Each participating team should observe the common standard of academic integrity adopted by mathematics journals. No penalty will be given to work that has received guidance from people within the school or beyond, as long as it is properly documented in the references of the report. The decision on whether or not a research report is accepted for this competition is made solely on academic quality and integrity.
