INSIGHTS FROM THE 2023 HLMA ONLINE WORKSHOP SERIES: HOW TO FIND A RESEARCH TOPIC
Hang Lung Mathematics Awards (HLMA) hosted an online workshop titled “How to Find a Research Topic” on Friday, April 21, 2023, moderated by Professor Frederick Fong, Associate Professor of the Department of Mathematics at HKUST. The workshop aimed to equip participants of the 2023 HLMA with the necessary skills and knowledge to identify a research direction and set achievable goals.
Professor Fong explained the key differences between general mathematics exams and genuine mathematics research. While the former involves solving problems within stringent time limits, the latter involves exploring self-identified research topics and potentially adapting them based on emerging insights. To conduct meaningful research in mathematics, students must possess a deep understanding of mathematics concepts, coupled with strong logical and critical thinking abilities.
Professor Fong highlighted the importance of these foundational skills and shared invaluable advice on selecting suitable research topics, expanding the frontier of existing theories, as well as anticipating, and mitigating potential obstacles.
All 70 workshop attendees, comprising teachers and students, actively engaged in the discussion. HLMA has planned more online workshops in the coming months to further strengthen the research skills of its participants.
