Fermat's Last Theorem: Looking Back after 30 Years

Professor Kenneth A. Ribet, a distinguished Professor of Mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, and a member of the 2023 Hang Lung Mathematics Awards Scientific Committee, is known for his contributions to the Fermat’s Last Theorem. This theorem had perplexed mathematicians for over 350 years, until it was proved by Professor Andrew Wiles in 1993.

To mark the 30th anniversary of the breakthrough, Professor Ribet delivered a presentation titled “Fermat's Last Theorem: Looking Back after 30 Years” at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He traced the historical journey of solving the theorem, from the initial endeavors of mathematicians throughout the centuries to latest developments.
