HLMA Public Talk Series: The Future of Universities

The first HLMA Public Talk in 2025 is around the corner! A new year often brings new challenges for students, and it is no different for schools as institutions. Our upcoming discussion will focus on the role and significance of universities in a rapidly changing world.

Universities have long been propelling intellectual advancements, yet their very survival is now under threat. Rising tuition fees, dwindling research funding, and geopolitical instability all pose significant challenges to higher education. How can universities navigate these obstacles? What roles and responsibilities should they embrace in our society today?

HLMA, in collaboration with the Asia Society Hong Kong Center, is honored to have two respected university leaders – Professor Nancy Rothwell and Professor Lap-Chee Tsui – share their insights on “The Future of Universities”. Under Professor Rothwell’s 14-year leadership, The University of Manchester saw significant growth in student enrollment and research funding. She also chaired the Russell Group of top British universities from 2020 to 2023. Professor Tsui, during his decade-long service as Vice-Chancellor of HKU, strengthened the university’s international standing and built a modern campus which now accommodates not only more students but also new facilities that meet various learning needs. He was also the Founding President of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences from 2015 to 2022. The panel will be moderated by Professor Nick Rawlins, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at CUHK, whose previous academic career spanned five decades at the University of Oxford.

The dialogue will take place at 5:30pm on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at the Asia Society Hong Kong Center.
