Insights into the World of Academia

Hang Lung Mathematics Awards (HLMA) organized a sharing session on Friday, March 24, 2023, titled “Get to Know Our Professors”. The session was moderated by Professor Shing Yu Leung, Associate Dean of Science at HKUST. It offered students a unique opportunity to gain insights into the experience and expertise of academics.

Professor Frederick Fong, Associate Professor of the Department of Mathematics was invited to share his learning and working experience as well as his journey of becoming a professor. Professor Fong provided valuable insights into the duties and responsibilities of professors and offered advice to students interested in pursuing a career in academia, particularly in the field of mathematics. He encouraged students to exchange ideas with peers and emphasized the importance of adequately preparing oneself before delving into new topics, stating that “if you find the right way, there is nothing you can't learn.”

About 50 secondary school students and HKUST students attended the sharing session, both virtually and in person. The session provided them with a better understanding of academic life and the skills required to succeed in the field. The event was just one of several that HLMA has planned for the year. A series of online workshops from April to August will offer students opportunities to learn and develop their skills.
