Mind vs. Machine: The Future of Mathematics

The future of mathematics is being reshaped by AI, opening new frontiers of discovery while prompting profound questions about the role of human intelligence in advancing knowledge.

At this pivotal moment, HLMA Talks is honored to welcome Professor Jennifer Chayes, Dean of UC Berkeley’s College of Computing, Data Science, and Society, and Professor Jean-Michel Morel, Chair Professor of Data Science at Lingnan University, for a thought-provoking discussion on the future of mathematics in the age of AI. The discussion will be moderated by Professor Shingyu Leung, Professor of Mathematics and Associate Dean of Science at HKUST and Chair of the HLMA Executive Committee.

Professor Chayes, a renowned mathematician and computer scientist, spent 23 years at Microsoft Research, where she co-founded and led three interdisciplinary research labs across North America. Complementing her perspective, Professor Morel brings deep expertise spanning mathematics, computer vision, and AI, rooted in his training as a pure mathematician and specialist in partial differential equations.

Together, they will explore whether AI can become a genuine mathematical thinker, how it may transform mathematical research and discovery, and where human creativity, intuition, and insight will remain indispensable. For teachers, schools, and students, the discussion offers a valuable opportunity to consider how these advances may shape the mathematics that future generations will learn, explore, and ultimately help advance.
