Online Workshop 1: How to Find a Research Topic?

On April 30, 2021, Professor Frederick Fong of the Department of Mathematics, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology conducted an online workshop – Topic: “How to Find a Research Topic?” – exclusive for secondary school students who have registered to participate in the 2021 Hang Lung Mathematics Awards (HLMA).

During the workshop, Professor Fong shared some tips on how to kickstart a research process and how to choose an achievable research topic for the HLMA competition. He also inspired students on how to come up with new ideas and highlighted the key steps to build up a strong foundation for their research project.

Professor Fong pointed out that scholars usually started a new research having been somehow motivated by ancestors’ works, and there are infinite possibilities on the topics and scope one can develop and work on. Regardless of the outcome of the research process, Professor Fong hopes that everyone will enjoy the experience and find the process rewarding.

The online workshop was well received. The interactive Q&A session showed that the students are enthusiastic about the topic and demonstrated a keen interest to learn more about conducting research.
