ONLINE WORKSHOP 4 & 5: WRITING A MATH RESEARCH REPORT AND TYPESETTING USING LATEX AND OVERLEAF

On August 12, 2021, Professor Frederick Fong and Dr. Albert Ku, both from Mathematics Department of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, carried out two online workshops for the HLMA participants to help them improve writing skill in mathematics research report.

During the first session, Professor Fong shared some important tips on how to write a math research report by showing some good and bad examples of the abstract, introduction, and body of the work. He said the critical elements of a good research paper are lucid writing and a logical construct that allows the reader to follow a clear path leading to the author’s conclusion.

In the second session, Dr. Albert Ku introduced LaTeX and Overleaf, an online cloud-based LaTeX editor (https://www.overleaf.com/), which is widely used for typesetting professional research papers. There are many LaTeX templates containing preambles that are designed for various purposes. For HLMA, Dr. Ku suggested students to use AMS (American Mathematical Society) templates. He then demonstrated how to type mathematics expressions (special alphabets and symbols, equations, and matrices and tables), figures, and referencing in LaTeX.
