Professor Ingrid Daubechies – 2021 HLMA Scientific Committee Member

Hang Lung Mathematics Awards (HLMA) is glad to have Professor Ingrid Daubechies, James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University, to join as a member of the 2021 HLMA Scientific Committee, the academic and adjudicating body of the competition.

Professor Daubechies is no stranger to the HLMA family; she has been a member of the 2014 HLMA Scientific Committee. We are appreciative of Professor Daubechies’ continued support and endorsement of HLMA.

A member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Professor Daubechies is well known for her discovery and mathematical analysis of compactly supported wavelets, which are fundamental to the image compression technology that has revolutionized the use of JPGs and other digital image formats.

In addition, Professor Daubechies is well known for her efforts to promote mathematics education, particularly efforts on promoting the contributions of women mathematicians. She was the first woman president of the International Mathematical Union (2011–2014).

Professor Daubechies is a recipient of numerous awards and honors. She received the Louis Empain Prize for Physics in 1984, awarded once every five years to a Belgian scientist based on research work done before the age of 29. In 2000, she became the first woman to receive the National Academy of Sciences Award in Mathematics, presented every 4 years for excellence in published mathematical research. In 2012, King Albert II of Belgium granted Professor Daubechies the title of Baroness.

Professor Daubechies received her PhD in theoretical physics in 1980 at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium). She was named William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor and became the first female full professor of mathematics at Princeton in 2004, and moved to Duke University in 2011.
