Empowering the Next Generation

2025 HLMA is now open for registration! To help teachers learn more about the competition, we held an information session in January to introduce HLMA and the upcoming calendar of events.

During the session, Professor Shing Yu Leung, chair of the HLMA Executive Committee and Associate Dean of Science at HKUST, said students could choose their research topics from a wide array of areas, including not only algebra and geometry, but also applied mathematics problems about computers, economics, physics, and games.

Professor Frederick Fong from HKUST’s Department of Mathematics, who chairs the HLMA Screening Panel, said, “Teachers need not limit HLMA participation to students with the highest scores in M1 and M2 exams. The most important thing is to choose students who have an interest in mathematics and enjoy learning knowledge beyond the exam syllabus.

More than 30 teachers attended the event, including those who have supervised student winners in previous HLMAs, as well as many new faces who have not joined the competition before. After the session, participants exchanged their teaching insights while enjoying refreshments in a lively atmosphere.
