The Versatility of Mathematics in Different Fields

Highlights from the 2023 HLMA online workshop series: Research in Applied and Computational Mathematics

Hang Lung Mathematics Awards (HLMA) has organized an online workshop titled “Research in Applied and Computational Mathematics” on Friday, July 21, 2023. Professor Shing Yu Leung, Department of Mathematics, HKUST, introduced examples of how mathematics can be applied in different fields to provide students with a better understanding of its versatility apart from academic research.

Professor Leung explained that mathematics is the fundamental language of science and technology, and cited several examples including animation production, digital image processing, object detection, environmental impact assessment, social segregation, artificial intelligence, and medical research. He hoped that this online workshop could inspire students’ HLMA research and help them develop a better understanding of different mathematics skills and their applications in real life.

Towards the end of the workshop, Professor Leung shared some advice with students and encouraged them to learn more research methods and approach problems from different perspectives when they conduct their research. He believes that these valuable experiences will be beneficial to students’ future studies and career development.

HLMA will organize three more online workshops about report writing and steps for report submission.
